History of UnityUnity was founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in Kansas City, Missouri, and was rooted in this couple's desire for physical healing. Both were well versed in world religions. Myrtle discovered that by repeating the affirmative prayer, "I am a child of God, therefore, I do not inherit sickness," and praying for perfect health for two years, she was healed of terminal tuberculosis. Charles used the same type of prayer that affirmed God's presence within him, and he was healed of injuries that had hampered him since childhood. Their friends soon began practicing affirmative prayer, the Fillmore's began writing about their beliefs, and the Unity movement was born. Unity Village, located 15 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City, Missouri, was originally established by the Fillmore's as a place for people to be refreshed from the activities of daily life. The Unity School of Christianity was eventually organized, and Unity Village became its home. The Mediterranean-style grounds include 1400 acres of gardens, woodlands, and recreational facilities that attract thousands of spiritual seekers every year. Unity School is world headquarters for the 108-year old and still-growing movement. Unity groups are now found all over the world ... in North, South, and Central America; the West Indies; the Caribbean; Africa; Europe; Russia; the Middle East; India; the Pacific Rim; and Australia. The Unity movement was founded over 100-years ago on Christian principles, spiritual values, and the healing power of prayer. Originally perceived as a spiritual resource for daily living, it was never intended to become an independent Christian denomination, but evolved into one as interest in these gentle metaphysical ideas rapidly grew. Unity transcends religious denominations as a harmonizing, strengthening influence. Whether you have a church home, have never joined a church, or already practice Unity principles, Unity welcomes you as a kindred spirit who is learning to apply spiritual principles in pursuit of a happier, healthier, and more prosperous life. Unity embraces all people. We believe there is truth in all teachings. Unity leaves all people free to find the truth for themselves. Although Unity was built on the belief in the healing power of prayer, the founders never insisted that those who sought their help forsake medical attention. Unity supports the medical community and still believes in people getting help in every way they can. Unity offers a practical, non-dogmatic approach to Christianity that helps people of all faiths lead happier, healthier, and more prosperous lives. Unity emphasizes that God is good and that God's will for humankind is good. As children of God, we are heirs to all that God is and all that God provides. Unity teaches that God is present in every person, and through prayer and meditation, we can experience God's presence in our lives and circumstances. Unity serves all who seek inspiration and prayer support, without regard to church affiliation, as well as those who use Unity teachings as their primary path of spiritual growth under the auspices of local Unity organizations. |
